Master in Informatics Engineering
General Objectives of the CourseMEI aims to provide specialized training in the different areas of information technologies allowing students to carry out advanced professional activities, and enabling students to pursue a career in science to continue their training in a doctoral program. MEI aims to complement the Informatics Engineering training of students from a related 1st cycle course, giving them specialized knowledge and equipping them with the design skills essential to the recognition of the profession by the Order of Engineers at national level, and by similar institutions at international level. MEI's organization follows the curriculum recommendations of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), adapting them to the characteristics of the national candidates and to the logics of mobility envisaged in the European Higher Education area.
Potential candidates should fulfil one of the following requirements:
a) Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Informatics and Systems Engineering, Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering;. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent in other areas of Engineering and Exact and Natural Sciences which are organized according to Bologna process
b) Holders of a foreign academic degree obtained in a 1st cycle organised according to the Bologna process in the areas mentioned in point a) or that is recognized by the Scientific Committee of DEI to meet the objectives of a 1st cycle degree in the areas mentioned in point a)
c) In justified cases, holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized to confer the capacity to complete this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of DEI.
Candidates should check the admission requirements available on this site, in addition to the information provided here.
Professional GoalsMEI graduates in the various specialization areas are prepared to work in the services, industrial, and academic sectors. MEI graduates are apt to carry out their work and to apply to jobs in areas such as:
- Software Engineer and Architect
- Quality Manager
- Manager of software projects and information technologies
- Engineer in communications and infrastructures for the Internet
- Engineer in virtualization, data centers and cloud services
- Computer Security Specialist
- Data analyst and visualization expert
- Advanced Human-Computer Interaction Designer
- Service Designer

- Business Architect / IT
Since the area of computing is transversal to our society, industry, and economy, the MEI's training encompasses relevant areas such as medical and health-related informatics, intelligent transport systems, Internet of Things, and cyber-physical systems.
Mode of StudyFull-time,Face-to-face
Teaching / Evaluation language(s)Portuguese/ English
Examination Regulations, Assessment and GradingSince evaluation is a pedagogical activity that is inseparable from teaching, it is designed to assess the skills and knowledge acquired by the students, their critical thinking, their ability to enunciate and solve problems, as well as their mastery of written and oral exposition. MEI evaluation rules follow the Regulation of Knowledge Evaluation of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra published in Diário da República, 2nd series - No. 74 - April 16, 2018. The evaluation of the curricular units is carried out taking into account their specificities. Most of the curricular units follow the periodic assessment model, including evaluation methods that target problem solving, laboratory work, written assignments, projects and presentations, among others.
Learning Objectives and Intended SkillsThe aim of this study cycle is to train masters capable of taking up prominent positions in the business and research market in the area of informatics. Students completing MEI will acquire advanced knowledge in Informatics, with specialization in one of four areas: (i) Communications, Services and Infrastructures, (ii) Intelligent Systems, (iii) Information Systems, and (iv) Software Engineering. They will also strengthen their knowledge in the area of Economics, Management, and Social Sciences. In addition, students will acquire generic skills in analysis and synthesis, written and oral communication, problem-solving approaches, critical thinking, decision-making group work, autonomous learning and practical application of theoretical knowledge. The curricular units of MEI are planned with the learning objectives in mind, and enable the development of key competences in the field of informatics engineering.
