Master in Informatics Engineering
General Objectives of the CourseMEI follows the latest curricular recommendations of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) and of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), adapting them to the single characteristics of the national candidates, to the logic of mobility wanted in the Higher Education European space, and to the recommendations gathered by a large panel (in particular EDP, PT, PT-SI, PT-Inovação, Deloitte, PT-SAPO, ISA, Tapestry, Critical Software, WiT Software) of national recruiters who have supported us in this reform.
We propose an integrative plan of studies which allows to explore internal and external synergies, for a quality offer, meeting the needs of the labour market (Scientific and industrial), guaranteeing students who have finished the Bachelor degree to continue their studies, attracting students from other schools, granting a solid training to prepare students for the profession and allows them to carry on their studies at the 3rd cycle level (Doctorate).
1. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent in: Computer Engineering, Communications and Multimedia, Informatics and Systems Engineering, Communications and Telematics, Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Telecommunication Engineering;
2. Holders of the Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent in other areas of Engineering and Exact and Natural Sciences;
3. Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized by the Research Department of Computer Science to meet the objectives of a degree in the areas mentioned in the previous paragraphs;
4. In justified cases, holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized to attest the capacity to complete this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of the Department of Computer Science.

Professional GoalsThe degrees of the informatics Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra are heavily quoted in business, as demonstrated by the full employment of our former students in prestigious national and international companies. In general, DEI alumni employers are the major software companies (eg Novabase Critical S / W), services (eg Banking, Insurance, Energy), Telecommunications Operators (PT, Vodafone and Oni) large multinational computer, software houses, large manufacturing companies (chemical, pulp and paper, mechanical engineering), public administration, small and medium-sized industrial and service design and consulting companies, university and polytechnic institutes of scientific research and technological development. The Master of Science in Informatics Engineering also aims to provide advanced training in different areas of computing, allowing students to pursue their scientific studies in a doctoral program.

Learning Objectives and Intended SkillsThe Master of Science in Informatics Engineering (MEI) proposes four areas of specialization according to the latest curriculum recommendations of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE): (i) Communications, Services and Infrastructures, (ii) Intelligent Systems, (iii) information systems, and (iv) Software Engineering.
These specializations intend to meet the market needs, both in industry, services and research, aspiring to an international impact in the medium term.

Recognition of Prior LearningCandidates may claim the assignment of equivalence of courses taken in the Higher Education system.
Qualification Requirements and RegulationsDecree-Law n. º 74/2006, of 24 March, in its present redaction.
The courses of the common body are mandatory for all students of the Master in Informatics Engineering (MEI), and represent 30 ECTS, ¼ of the course.
The courses of the center circle (specialization) are compulsory for students of each Thematic Option, taking aim at an in-depth training in the topics central for each theme option. We propose the existence of 24 ECTS in specialization courses.
Open Electives aim at flexible training for students, allowing them to choose the topics that best suit their needs and training objectives. On the other hand, while the subjects of each Thematic Option courses tend to be more focused on the fundamentals of the respective Thematic Option, optional subjects tend to be integrative and more technological.
Together with the optional electives, the courses of a particular Thematic Option can be taken as an option for students in other thematic options.
It is also allowed for students to make up 12 ECTS (electives) of courses outside of the degree (including courses from other degrees of DEI, UC , and within the ERASMUS program). This is subject to validation / approval of the course coordinator, who will examine each case.
The internship aims to be the vehicle of consolidation, integration and application of the knowledge acquired during the degree. The dissertation / internship will be associated with the theme option that the student is attending in the format of 42 ECTS, divided into two semesters of 12 + 30 ECTS. The final document may be written in Portuguese or English.
Students can join the course in foreign universities under the Erasmus program or specific protocols.
