General Objectives of the Course

The Master’s degree in Design and Multimedia favors a solid interdisciplinary training that focuses on the knowledge, skills and competences which will enable future graduate students to explore the new digital media in a creative and innovative way.
The degree aims to train qualified professionals to create products and services with the new media by combining a training in design with elements of the information technologies. In this way, students will be trained to work in multidisciplinary teams, where they will translate the several work languages and use the information technologies efficiently in order to adapt them to the way we communicate, see, think and interact with the world around us. This degree will mainly focus in areas related to interaction design, interface design, web design and digital production.
Regarding the methodology, the degree follows a pedagogical approach which mainly focuses on developing skills. In fact, the generic and specific skills relevant to the 2nd cycle in Design and Multimedia are identified and developed in several curricular units. Naturally, the methodological options are well articulated with the curricular decisions underlying the organization of the degree in order to guarantee the balance between the instrumental, systemic and interpersonal skills. These skills are also to be developed in each curricular unit, considering its curricular objectives.

Admission Requirements

The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
The Master’s degree curricular structure anticipates applicants from different academic backgrounds – for instance Bachelor’s degree in Design, Informatics, Communication and Multimedia -. Therefore, curricular units to homogenize different knowledge backgrounds will be created, according to the profile of each applicant. The purpose is to fill in any possible gap of their academic background.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

In the methodological plan the M.Sc. privileges a pedagogical approach focused on competences, identifying the generic and specific skills in the different courses relevant for the 2nd cycle in Design and Multimedia. The methodological options are naturally integrated in the curriculum defined by the organization of the degree, in a way to grant a balance between the instrumental, systemic and interpersonal competences. We have also sought to reflect these three types of competences in each course.
