Training Course in Physical and Natural Sciences Core Curricula for Teaching Sciences

General Objectives of the Course

By law, (Decreto-Lei 43/2007 de 22 de Fevereiro), previously to the acceptance of candidates applying to the Master degree on Teaching Physics and Chemistry or the Master degree on Teaching Biology and Geology, applicants must have obtained a minimum amount of ECTS in the basic contents of the respective scientific domains. This course aims at the possibility of allowing large spectra of graduates on pure and applied sciences to complete the respective compulsory Masters’ on Teaching entrance conditions.

Admission Requirements

1st cycle or pre-Bologna Licenciatura, with either Pure or Applied Sciences as main areas, willing to pursue studies within the Master degree on Teaching Physics and Chemistry in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education or within the Master degree on Teaching Biology and Geology in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

This study cycle’s disciplines are all part of the existing ones on the 1st cycles on Biology, Geology, Physics and Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology. Hence assessment rules have to be the ones defined beforehand for these degrees.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

• Acquaintance either with fundamental Biology and Geology concepts and laws or Physics and Chemistry ones, as well as with specific methodologies and ways to solve problems;
• Understanding specific scientific theories and models (Biology and Geology or Physics and Chemistry), specific logic and/or mathematical structures, and how to use observation and experiments to investigate nature’s behavior;
• Familiarity with adequate experimental techniques, and practice of autonomy during experimental inquiries, data collection and analysis followed by reflection.

Recognition of Prior Learning

It will be accomplish through recognising previous studies, with the possibility of equivalence’s attribution to disciplines with fundamental contents either on Biology and Geology or on Physics and Chemistry, important to a future Basic (3rd cycle) and Secondary School teacher. Every student’s curricular plan must be approved by the course coordinator.
