Bachelor's Degree in Geology

General Objectives of the Course

The bachelor in Geology is a professional who is able to work autonomously, to carry out geological mapping, to explore for natural resources, and to collaborate on studies in all areas of planning, land use, and natural hazards,
and to collect, analyze, interpret and communicate geological information efficiently, not only for specialists but also for other audiences.

Admission Requirements

National Call for Access and Entry to Higher Education (DGES):

One of the following subjects:
02 Biology and Geology
09 Geography
16 Mathematics

Application score: 100 points (0-200 scale)
Entry exams: 95 points (0-200 scale)

Calculation Formula:
Secondary school average: 50%
Entry exams: 50%

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The bachelor in Geology must:
- Have perfect and up-to-date knowledge of minerals, rocks, minerals, fossils, water, coal, and hydrocarbons, their
origins, developments and practical interests, and of the Geology of Portugal;
- Be able to read geological information, namely mapping, and interpret it;
- Be able to perform geological surveys, geological mapping and geological cross-sections, and to interpret
geologically the mapped areas;
- Have knowledge of generic experimentation activities in the field and in the laboratory;
- Have a vision of the Earth as a whole, know its evolution, and the workings of geological systems;
- Have a vision of Earth in the contexts of the Universe and the Solar System.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Decree-Law no. 74/2006, 24th of March, changed and republished by the decree: DL no. 107/2008, 25th of June; Ordinance no. 782/2009, 23rd of July. The course plan was published in the Dispatch no. 7630/2009.

Graduation Requirements

In order to receive the Degree without Minor, the student must achieve a minimum of 180 ECTS, distributed in the following scientific fields and associated compulsory/ optional credits:
Geology - 108/36; Mathematics - 6/0-6; Physics - 6/0-6; Chemistry - 6/0-6; Biology - 0/0-24.
In order to receive the Degree with Minor, the student must achieve 180 ECTS, distributed in the following Scientific fields and associated Compulsory/ Optional credits: Geology - 108/0-6; Mathematics - 6/ 0-6; Physics - 6/0-6; Chemistry - 6/0-6; Biology - 0/0-24; Scientific Field of the Minor - 0/0-30.
