The following are also objectives of this program:
- To provide essential knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
- To provide a solid scientific, theoretical and laboratory training allowing the student to pursue a career in several fields: Research, Industry (Food, Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology) and Science Promotion, both nationally and internationally.
- To provide an initial training in a wide range of subjects within Biology being the basis for an advanced training in several areas of specialization, within the European education context.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
In accordance with the Dublin descriptors, the Degree in Biology in the University of Coimbra clearly identifies several transversal and specific competences in the scientific area of Biology. Both kinds of competences are distributed among the disciplines according to the objectives of each one and the teaching methodologies adopted (e.g. theoretical, practical, tutorial training).
The Degree in Biology of the UC provides the students both with a sound and pluridisciplinar knowledge and training in several specialization areas. On the whole, training is based on theoretical principles as well as laboratory practice and field work. At the end of their training, students get the skills and expertise necessary to pursue their advanced training (2nd and 3th degrees) or to initiate a professional career in several areas, for example, Scientific research in the fields of Environment, Biotechnology, Health, and Biodiversity and Conservation; Scientific dissemination and Consulting, management and technical consulting in the field of environment.
Mode of Study
Access to Further Studies
The BSc Biology degree provides direct access to the MSc in Biology. For MSc in specialised areas within Biology (e.g. Ecology, Plant Biodiversity and Biotechnology) applications are accepted.
