Master’s degree in Human Evolution and Biology

General Objectives of the Course

This course has as main goal to offer advanced formation on issues related with human evolution and human biology, as follows: i) the importance of the knowledge of natural history to the understanding of the present and to envision the future; ii) the understand humans as primates; to be aware of climatic changes and the major animal extinctions; iii)human adaptation capacity; to know how to deal with the incessant rhythm of change that characterizes human paleoanthropology; v) to get an interdisciplinary approach about humans and humanity; vi) to be able to interpret and deal with human skeletons from archaeological contexts.

Candidates must have one of the following courses: Anthropology, Biology, Geology, Biology and Geology, Archaeology, Psichology or any other equivalent legal degree in Natural or Social Sciences.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently enrolled. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

This course has as goal to offer a specialized formation, inter and multidisciplinary at an advanced level in distinct areas of Biological Anthropology, such as human evolution, skeletal biology, paleopathology, human ecology, human ethology and human genetics. Students should acquire Instrumental competencies, in synthesis and analysis, organization and planning, in oral and writing communication, in managing information, to solve problems and to make decisions; Personal and Inter-personal competencies, in group work, in working in interdisciplinary teams, within an international context, in critical reasoning, competency in understanding specialists language; Systemic competencies, in autonomous learning, in searching, capability to adjust to new situations, creativity, leadership, initiative and enterprising spirit, care about rigor and quality, in applying practically the theoretical knowledge, in planning and managing, in auto-criticism and auto-evaluation.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law nº 74/2006, 24th March, the current wording.

Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the Master degree the student must complete a curricular part worth 60 ECTS, carry out a curricular unit to monitor the dissertation/internship (3 ECTS) and develop an original research project leading to the Dissertation (57 ECTS) or Instershhip (57 ECTS) and its defense.

Access to Further Studies

This course gives access to PhD in Anthropology and in other related areas, both in Portugal and abroad.
