PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

It is intended the holders of a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer become entitled to act in sectors that require high competence in the subject areas of expertise, particularly in higher education, laboratories and research institutes, industrial enterprises and services and public administration. Search will encourage doctoral students in the desirable ability to innovate, research and updating a perspective of internationalization and strengthening national technological capacity. To achieve the training objectives of the doctoral course in a total of 60 ECTS, organized a curriculum structure in which they identified five areas of expertise related to areas of greatest scientific competence and teaching in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Coimbra and Areas of Expertise:
- Specialization in Automation and Robotics
- Specialization in Computers and Electronics
- Expertise in Energy
- Specialization in Materials and Devices
- Specialization in Telecommunications
The thesis is elaborated after the curricular year (which corresponds to a total of 60 ECTS, including a Thesis Project of 36 ECTS and 4 disciplines with 6 ECTS each) and takes a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years for completion, corresponding to 120 ECTS.

Admission Requirements

According to the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra (hereafter designated as RAUC - dispatch Nº 6448/2010 –RAUC) the qualifications of access and prerequisites for application to a PhD programme are according to Art. 64: a) holding a M.Sc degree or legal equivalent; b) holding a degree of “licenciado” and a specially relevant academic, professional or scientific curriculum guaranteeing the capacity to pursue a PhD programme, recognised as such by the scientific committee of the university organic unit where they want to ingress; d) holders of a specially relevant academic, professional or scientific curriculum guaranteeing the capacity to pursue a PhD programme, recognised as such by the scientific committee of the university organic unit where they want to ingress.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Given the fact that pedagogical assessment is inseparable from teaching, it is intended to ascertain competences and knowledge that students acquired, their critical thinking, their ability to point out and solve problems, as well as their written and oral expression. Students admitted to examination are those who are registered in the curricular units in the academic year in which the exams are carried out and, simultaneously, registered in those examinations, whenever this registration is necessary, in accordance with number 7, article 5 of the Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra. The assessment elements are the following examples: written or oral exam, tests, written or practical assignments, as well as individual or group projects that may have to be orally defended and students’ participation in classes. Assessment of each curricular unit may include one or more of the mentioned assessment elements. The mark obtained by each student in each curricular unit consists of a whole number between 0 and 20 points and students who obtain the minimum final mark of 10 points are successfully assessed. Whenever assessment of a curricular unit comprises more than one assessment element, the final mark is calculated on the basis of the marks students obtained in each assessment. element by means of a formula that is made public in accordance with number 1, article 8 of the Pedagogical Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Recognition of Prior Learning


The applicants to the PhD course may formally apply for the recognition of previous degrees as either “habilitações” (RAUC - nº 46 of Art. 3º) under Art. 99 or “equivalencias” (RAUC- nº 20 of Art. 3) under Art. 98 of the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra but this is not a necessary condition for applying to the ingress in the course. Nevertheless the application to the PhD course just requires the candidate to deliver the certificates of the diplomas mentioned in the electronic application of the candidate, certificates which will have to be validated by the Faculty Academic Services (SA), following legal terms.

Access to Further Studies

The PhD degree is, according to the present legislation (Decree Law nº 239/2007) one of the requirements enabling the application to the university academic degree of “Agregação (No. 1 of Art. 7) in the framework of the Statutes of the University Career- Decree Law 205/2009),
