PhD(Inter-Universitary) Program in Mathematics
Entidade parceira: Universidade do Porto
General Objectives of the Course
The PhD Program aims a postgraduate education leading to the award of a PhD degree in Mathematics in the research areas existing within the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the University of Coimbra or the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto. Doctoral candidates should become independent and creative researchers, able to strive for career development opportunities and trained to support, mentor or steer a wide array of knowledge transfer activities, guided by the aim of research excellence.Admission Requirements
Candidates are required to have completed a degree in Mathematics (or a related area) of one of the following types:
- a Master degree (2nd cycle of higher studies in the European Union Bolonha system);
- a Bachelor degree (4 or more years undergraduate degree in the pre-Bolonha system);
- any degree which is legally considered equivalent to one of the above.
Applications from candidates who are expected to satisfy the above requirement before the planned date of start of their doctoral studies within the Program are welcome. If accepted, admission will be conditioned on completion of one of the required degrees. Exceptionally, candidates whose scientific, academic and professional curriculum demonstrates ability to pursue doctoral studies may also apply. It is up to the Steering Committee to evaluate whether the special conditions are met. For this purpose, besides a certificate, candidates should include an official transcript of the courses completed and corresponding grades.
Candidates should check the admission requirements available on this site, in addition to the information provided here.

EnglishExamination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently enrolled. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline.Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
The Joint PhD Program in Mathematics UC|UP was created in 2007 in response to the need to develop, organize, and direct to an international audience, the increasing activity of the Mathematics Departments of the Universities of Coimbra and Porto in the mentoring of PhD students. The PhD Program’s structure, defining strategy and management aim, from the very beginning, to achieve and to keep a modern, updated, flexible and completely research-oriented post-graduation program, with a clear international scope and high quality standards. The interdisciplinary interaction and the development of research work in non-academic context are also objectives whose implementation should be gradually intensified. Successful students will have a broad mathematical culture and will be prepared to be competitive researchers.Course Coordinator(s)
