General Objectives of the Course

The goal of DPSP is to develop, through the cooperation between two schools, FEUP and FCTUC, a highquality doctoral Programme, capable of becoming an international reference and of attracting very good students from all over the world.

Admission Requirements

The following may apply for admission to the PhD Program: - Master's degree holders or holders of equivalent qualifications; - Holders of a first degree (licenciate), who have an academic or scientific curriculum that is seen to demonstrate the ability to carry out this cycle of studies to the Scientific Council of FCTUC, following the proposal by the Scientific Committee of the DQ. - Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum who are recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies to the Scientific Council of FCTUC.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The completion of the Doctoral Programme in Spatial Planning will allow students to acquire the following knowledge, skills, and competences:
a) Advanced knowledge of the contemporary spatial dynamics, and of planning theory.
b) Advanced skills to develop research contributing to the expansion of knowledge, while respecting the requirements of academic quality and integrity.
c) Advanced skills to analyze from a critical perspective, assess, and summarize new and complex concepts.
d) Advanced competences to communicate scientific results to their peers, other members of the academic community, and the general public.
e) Advanced competences to promote technological, social, and cultural progress both in an academic and/or a professional context.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no 74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by the decree: DL no 107/2008, 25th June; ordinance no 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

The Doctoral Programme in Spatial Planning (DPSP) includes a teaching component – doctoral course – with 60 ECTS and the preparation of a doctoral thesis with 120 ECTS. The teaching component comprises four mandatory curricular units and three optional units. At least two of the optional units must be chosen among
the ones designated as “Optativas” in the Study Plan. The remaining one can be chosen among any other doctoral curricular units of the Doctoral Programme schools or any schools with which they have a doctoral collaboration protocols. The choice must have the agreement of the Programme’s Scientific Committee.
