PhD degree in Contemporary Studies
General Objectives of the Course
The cycle of studies aims to support the training of autonomous and effective researchers, imaginative and rigorous. It seeks to achieve this goal by fostering the construction of contemporary knowledge about the complexity of societies and emerging issues. To this end, the study cycle adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on contemporary history, European studies, political science, arts studies, communication sciences, education and/or health sciences. The relevance of epistemological, theoretical and methodological tools for the production of operative scientific or technological knowledge is emphasised. The individualised or comparative analysis of social phenomena on a local/regional, national and international scale in the short, medium or long term is promoted. Students will significantly increase their degree of autonomy as researchers and will be able to structure interdisciplinary and comparative approaches.Admission Requirements
a) Master’s holders or equivalent;
b) Lecturers approved in pedagogocal and scientific capacity;
c) Degree holders with suitable relevant academic and scientific resume evaluated by the Scientific Board of the organic unit.

Identify and delimit relevant study objects, select different and adequate research methods (epistemological assumptions, theoretical concepts, methods), achieve competences in planning and executing scientific research projects, producing and disseminating scientific knowledge.Developing of skills in adopting simultaneously analytical perspectives of two or more knowledge areas (History, Political Sciences, European Studies, Artistic Studies, Communication Sciences, Education Sciences and Health Sciences) in short, mid and long term basis of two countries.
The capacity to respect the code of ethics and of public discussion (internal and with the society in general) adopted by the scientific community, to understand the social implications of scientific knowledge and of the resulting technologies, to contribute to a more conscience, fair and sustainable society.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no 74/2006, de 24 th March, amended and republished by the decree: DL no 107/2008, 25th June; ordinance no 782/2009, 23th JulyGraduation Requirements
The PhD Course in European Studies takes 4 years (240 ECTS) and a PhD thesis to be completed. The first year is constituted by 2+2 Seminars per semester, of 45 minutes each (15x3 hours per week). All 240 ECTS have to be obtained with an average of 14/20 to pass to the 2nd year. The students that complete the 1st year and don’t wish to continue the Program will receive a Diploma of Advanced Studies. From the 2nd to the 4th year there will be annual tutorial seminars and monitoring of the thesis.
