PhD degree in Contemporary Studies

General Objectives of the Course

The aim is to offer this curriculum to support the formation of independent researchers and effective, imaginative and rigorous. It seeks to achieve this objective by promoting the acquisition of complex knowledge of contemporary societies. We adopt for this purpose, an interdisciplinary perspective, from contemporary history, European studies, political science, of art studies, science communication, science education and / or health sciences. We emphasize the relevance of the instruments epistemological, theoretical and methodological for the production of scientific knowledge or technological operation. It promotes the individual or comparative analysis of social phenomena at local / regional, national and international short, medium or long term. The students of the 3rd Cycle Studies in Contemporary expand significantly the degree of autonomy as researchers. Be able to structure interdisciplinary and comparative approaches for thematic micro, meso or macro. May acquire skills identification and delineation of significant objects of study, selection of appropriate working methods of objectifying knowledge explicit. Will have greater ability to design, implement and evaluate technology solutions, derived from various disciplines, enable the satisfaction of social needs.

a) Master’s holders or equivalent;
b) Lecturers approved in pedagogocal and scientific capacity;
c) Degree holders with suitable relevant academic and scientific resume evaluated by the Scientific Board of the organic unit.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Identify and delimit relevant study objects, select different and adequate research methods (epistemological assumptions, theoretical concepts, methods), achieve competences in planning and executing scientific research projects, producing and disseminating scientific knowledge.
Developing of skills in adopting simultaneously analytical perspectives of two or more knowledge areas (History, Political Sciences, European Studies, Artistic Studies, Communication Sciences, Education Sciences and Health Sciences) in short, mid and long term basis of two countries.
The capacity to respect the code of ethics and of public discussion (internal and with the society in general) adopted by the scientific community, to understand the social implications of scientific knowledge and of the resulting technologies, to contribute to a more conscience, fair and sustainable society.

Graduation Requirements

The PhD Course in European Studies takes 4 years (240 ECTS) and a PhD thesis to be completed. The first year is constituted by 2+2 Seminars per semester, of 45 minutes each (15x3 hours per week). All 240 ECTS have to be obtained with an average of 14/20 to pass to the 2nd year. The students that complete the 1st year and don’t wish to continue the Program will receive a Diploma of Advanced Studies. From the 2nd to the 4th year there will be annual tutorial seminars and monitoring of the thesis.
