Doctorate in Education Sciences
General Objectives of the Course
Undertaking the third cycle provides the necessary conditions for a more specialised training and, at the same time, fosters the creation of research networks, thus contributing to the promotion of international cooperation programmes. This level of study aims to train highly qualified professionals in the field of Education Sciences, equipping them with research models, methodologies and techniques that enable them to produce a doctoral thesis with high standards of academic quality and integrity, as well as original and innovative results, thus creating new knowledge.The cycle of studies conducive to a doctorate degree is organised in two modalities, with and without taught component, both of which have a minimum duration of three years and a maximum duration of five years. In the first year of an edition of a doctorate with taught component, no applications to a doctorate without taught component in the same specialty area will be accepted. The doctorate without taught component comprises the production and defence of an original thesis, whose project must be previously approved by the Scientific Council of the FPCE-UC. The cycle of studies with taught component, classified as a course in advanced studies, includes attending Seminars on topics related to the field of specialty, Seminars on Research Methodology and Statistics, as well as a Follow-up Seminar for planning the thesis, for a total of 60 ECTS. After submitting the research project, doctoral candidates proceed to the following years, where they must conduct research with a view to producing and defending a dissertation, corresponding to 120 ECTS.
Admission Requirements
1 — Application to the study cycle conducive to the title of doctor of Education Sciences is open to those who:
a) Hold a master’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) Hold a licentiate degree, and possess a particularly relevant school or scientific curriculum that is acknowledged by the Scientific Council of the FPCE-UC as evidence of ability to undertake this study cycle;
c) Possess a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is acknowledged by the Scientific Council of the FPCE-UC as evidence of ability to undertake this study cycle.
2 – Acknowledgement mentioned in sections b) and c) of the previous item only allows access to the cycle of studies conducive to the title of doctor, and does not bestow on its holder an equivalence to a licentiate or master degree from the UC, or in any way acknowledge it.

The final qualification is attributed by the doctoral jury in light of the merit of the thesis evaluated in the public defence and viva.In the case of a doctorate with taught component, the final qualification will also consider the final mark of the doctorate course, under terms to be defined in the respective order of creation or applicable regulation.

The FPCE-UC attributes the title of doctor to students who obtain 180 ECTS, which correspond to:
With taught component: passing all curricular units of the 1st year of the Curricular Plan of the Cycle of Studies, with a minimum classification of 14 and of Good; producing and defending a thesis (after approval of the respective Project), with original scientific content and sufficient quality in the chosen area (120 ECTS).
Without taught component: producing and publicly defending a thesis (after approval of the respective Project from the Scientific Council) with original scientific content and sufficient quality in the chosen area.
Access to Further Studies
