General Objectives of the Course

The Doctoral Program in Transport Systems (DPTS) aims, through the congregation of efforts scattered about in previously autonomous doctoral programs, to develop a single high-quality program. This degree intends to become an international reference and to attract high-potential students worldwide. For that, the support of MIT is extremely important, as part of MIT-Portugal, not only now, but also in the future, as a result of the strong relationship that has been established with that institute.
Through the PDST, it will be possible to ensure that graduate researchers are reliably prepared to promote scientific and technological innovation in the area of transportation systems - not only in higher education institutions and in research laboratories, but also in companies and public institutions. They will certainly be able to find technical, social and environmental sustainable transport solutions to meet the mobility needs of households and businesses.

Admission Requirements

1 – Can apply to the DPTS:
a) Holders of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Management, Economics, Mathematics, Geography, Information Systems and related areas obtained before the implementation of the Bologna Process;
b) Holders of a Master degree (second cycle higher education) in Engineering, Management, Economics, Mathematics, Geography, Information Systems and related areas obtained after the implementation of the Bologna Process;
c) Holders of national or foreign qualification deemed, in legal terms, as equivalent to the previous ones.
2 - Holders of a scientific, academic and professional curriculum attesting the capacity to enable the degree of Doctor can also apply for PDST.
3 - Whenever the Scientific Committee of the DPTS considers necessary, it may recommend candidates to attend and complete one or more courses which are not part of the DPTS curriculum in order to supplement their training.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The completion of the DPTS will allow students to acquire the following knowledge, skills, and competences regarding the transport systems area:
a) Advanced knowledge of a broad subject within the area covered by the program.
b) Advanced skills to develop research contributing to the expansion of knowledge, while respecting the requirements of academic quality and integrity.
c) Advanced skills to analyze from a critical perspective, assess, and summarize new and complex concepts.
d) Advanced competences to communicate scientific results to their peers, other members of the academic community, and the general public.
e) Advanced competences to promote technological, social, and cultural progress both in an academic and/or a professional context.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no 74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by the decree: DL no 107/2008, 25th June; ordinance no 782/2009, 23rd July.
