Master's in Translation

General Objectives of the Course

The Master’s programme in Translation aims to provide specialised training adequate for professional needs of the growing language industry European and global context. It also aims to promote academic research and reflection on translation in all its complexity. The central objective of the programme is to provide scientific expertise, to develop specific translation skills and competences, and to familiarise students with translation tools associated to translation methodologies and technologies, as well as to prepare them for independent research.

Admission Requirements

A complete first cycle (BA), regardless of the scientific area;
Solid knowledge of the working languages. Applicants’ language skills will be assessed in an exam. Depending on their curriculum, applicants may be exempted from sitting the admission exam.

Professional Goals

This MA degree provides access to the profession of translator, which is not legally regulated in Portugal. However, most employers require specific competences and qualifications obtained through a university degree. It will facilitate access to jobs in revising, interpreting and other areas related to linguistic and cultural mediation.

Mode of Study

Seminars are usually taught after 5 p.m., all day Friday and Saturday in the morning.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently enrolled. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students are expected to develop the following skills and competences:
Excellent level of Portuguese and of the foreign work language(s);
Intellectual autonomy to analyse problems globally and in their specificities;
Independent research and information mining competence;
Autonomy in information processing;
Ability to deal with tasks systematically;
Solid knowledge, both in translation stricto sensu and in the cultural and technological aspects associated to it;
Self-evaluation;
Ability to think of and to create alternative solutions;
Team work flexibility and adaptability.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the following decrees: DL n.º 74/2006, de 24 de Março, amended and republished by the decree: DL n.º 107/2008, de 25 de Junho; Portaria n.º 782/2009, de 23 de Julho.

Graduation Requirements

The degree requires a pass in all curricular units, including a public defence of the final work (scientific dissertation, translation project or internship report).
