General Objectives of the Course

To promote the updating of nurses’ clinical competencies in the development of nursing interventions for children with ostomies in neonatal and pediatric settings. To develop clinical reasoning and decision-making in complex clinical situations, as well as to strengthen competencies in the prevention, early identification, and management of complications associated with different types of ostomies. To promote childand family-centered nursing interventions, empower parents/caregivers in ostomy management and care delivery, and apply knowledge through case analysis and problem-solving, contributing to the improvement of the quality and safety of care in neonatal and pediatric settings.

Admission Requirements

Nurses acting as student preceptors working in neonatal units, pediatric hospital services, and primary health care settings, with clinical practice involving care for children and families.

Clinical competencies in the assessment, planning, and management of care for neonates, children, and young people with an ostomy, including stoma and peristomal skin care; Ability to prevent, recognize early, and manage complications, ensuring safe, evidence-based clinical practice; Clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, applied to complex and variable pediatric and neonatal situations; Therapeutic communication skills with children/young people and their families/caregivers, fostering trust and partnership in care; Health education and empowerment skills, supporting parents/caregivers and progressively promoting the child/young person’s self-care; Care transition and discharge planning skills, ensuring continuity of care in community settings; Multidisciplinary teamwork skills, promoting effective collaboration among healthcare professionals; Reflective and family-centred practice, with the ability to critically analyze clinical practice and engage in continuous improvement.
