Advanced Specialization Course - Tribology and Surface Engineerin

Department of Mechanical Engineering Diploma/Certificate

General Objectives of the Course

Tribology, which studies friction, wear, and lubrication between surfaces in contact, is fundamental in the fields of intervention of Mechanical and Materials Engineers because these phenomena directly influence the performance of various mechanical systems that include components such as gears, bearings, and motors, which operate with contact between surfaces, where energy losses and material wear occur. This course aims to provide participants, engineers and researchers in the areas of design and development, with an integrated view of tribology and surface engineering solutions, enhancing the development of key assets for improving energy efficiency and optimizing the lifespan of mechanical components, and contributing to innovation and sustainability in multiple industrial applications.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The Tribology and Surface Engineering course aims to provide participants with training in key areas for improving the performance of mechanical components subject to wear and/or corrosion, complementing tribology training with the use of advanced surface engineering techniques. At the end of the course, participants will have supplementary training in:
1 - tribology and surface interactions;
2 - experimental and numerical modeling in tribology;
3 - corrosion and anti-corrosion protection;
4 - thin coatings to control friction and wear;
5 - industrial application of coatings and surface treatments.
