General Objectives of the Course

The course aims to provide a practical and critically informed introduction to the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in healthcare. It will explore thel principles that enable these technologies to understand and generate natural language, as well as their main applications in clinical, scientific, and educational contexts. Participants will engage with tools such as ChatGPT and other AI platforms, learning how to use them to support tasks such as patient communication, summarisation of clinical information, health literacy support, content creation, information organisation, and educational assistance. The course will address the limitations of these systems, including factual errors, bias, privacy, confidentiality, authorship, responsibility, and safety. The goal is to develop a solid understanding of the opportunities and risks of LLMs in healthcare, acquiring the skills needed for their responsible, critical, and context-aware use in professional and institutional settings.

Qualitative evaluation in a scale of approved/reproved. Passing the course requires attendance to all the classes and active participation.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

By the end of the course, participants should be able to identify basic uses of LLMs in healthcare, use tools such as ChatGPT in simple tasks related to communication support and information organisation, and recognise the limitations and precautions associated with their use. They are also expected to develop a critical and responsible perspective on the use of these technologies in sensitive contexts.
