Training Course in: Communication and Relationships in Healthcare

General Objectives of the Course

Objectives of the course: General objective: Training healthcare professionals in effective communication in healthcare settings.
Specific objectives: Reflect on communication, person-centred care and relationship-centred care; Understand and apply verbal and non-verbal communication strategies; Understand the phases and stages of the clinical interview; Understand and apply compassion and empathy strategies; Understand and apply communication strategies in specific situations; Understand and apply negotiation and influence strategies.

Admission Requirements

1. Registered Nurse at the following partner institutions (Order No. 13, dated 15 March 2024, from the President of ESEnfC): Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS Coimbra); Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Coimbra Francisco Gentil, E.P.E. (IPOCFG); Baixo Mondego Local Health Unit (ULS Baixo Mondego).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The assessment is quantitative and scored out of 20 points. Certification is awarded to trainees who achieve a mark of 10 or above and have attended more than 70% of teaching sessions.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Student skills by the end of the course: Trainees are expected to develop person-centred relational, therapeutic communication, empathy and compassion, and information sharing and shared decision-making skills, thereby fostering more mindful, appropriate and humanised clinical interactions.
