General Objectives of the Course

The study cycle aims to provide a solid and coherent foundational education in the various domains of Environmental Engineering, with an emphasis on core areas such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, computation and biology. This foundation is complemented by training in specific areas related to various technologies and interventions in the territory, industry, and both natural and built environments. The program also includes an alternative track with a Minor. Additionally, it encourages the development of personal skills and attitudes, namely scientific curiosity and creativity, critical thinking and sense of responsibility, autonomous learning, collaboration and teamwork in interdisciplinary settings, self-adaptation, communication, ethics, leadership, self-discipline and cultural ecumenism. It values knowledge and promotes entrepreneurship and the creation of innovative companies supported by scientific research.

Professional Goals

As a 3-year first-cycle degree, the programme aims to provide students with a basic foundation in Environmental Engineering (EE), enabling them to pursue a second-cycle master's course, to consolidate their knowledge and competences. Upon completing both study cycles in EE, graduates will have the essential qualifications for easy integration into the national and international labour market in this field.
The competences acquired in this degree enable graduates to enter the labour market and perform functions in various professional profiles of EE, including, among others, higher technician positions in public administration, environmental planning and design offices, and research laboratories and institutions. Students who complete the alternative track with a Minor, are qualified to work in a specific sector in EE.
As engineering is a regulated profession, the functions performed by EE graduates are those permitted by the relevant professional associations.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The evaluation rules are defined for each unit of the course in accordance with the University regulations. The final mark in every unit will be defined in the range 0 to 20; the lower mark to obtain the approval in each unit is 10.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

At the end of the cycle of studies, students are expected to have obtained key theoretical knowledge in fundamental sciences subjects and Environmental Eng. areas, that will enable them to increase their understanding and analysis of different issues, and pursue a Master’s (2nd cycle) in Environmental Eng., or similar fields. Also, students will be developing skills that enable to:
- Recognise and understand the main issues in the diverse Environmental Eng. fields;
- Define strategies and intervention techniques for solving simple problems of technological and territorial nature related to environment;
- Design and scale different types of Environmental Eng. projects with a low level of complexity;
- Take first steps in research in Environmental Eng.;
- Work in multidisciplinary teams;
- Develop team spirit, responsibility and ethics, discipline, self-learning and self-confidence increasing their capacity to deal with new subjects

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Graduation Requirements

To obtain the Bachelor degree, the student should obtain approval in all curricular units of the course (180 ECTS) or of the alternative track with Minor in Waste and Circulatity. Both tracks include 30 optional ECTS.

Access to Further Studies

By attributing the Bachelor Degree, this course allows access to second cycles studies, limited to the specific requirements established by each of these courses.
