Specialisation Course - International Ocean Politics

General Objectives of the Course

Based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, in the context of the United Nations, the aim of this course is to promote training in International Ocean Politics, in the scientific area of International Relations and complemented by areas such as History, Economics, Law. The objectives of this cycle of studies also include providing a solid scientific education that will enable students to develop a professional career in areas as diverse as Research, Industry, Governance, Policy Advising, Management. Students will be able to understand the multiple articulations between fields of knowledge and action required by International Ocean Politics, developing a critical standing vis-à-vis the current and future challenges. Students will be trained to perform in the context of the various dimensions of ocean governance, from a critical and ecosystemic view of maritime spaces.

The following are eligible to apply: a) Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent; b) In duly justified cases, holders of a scientific or professional curriculum whose merit is recognised by the course coordinators as attesting to their ability to complete the course may apply to attend the course

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final assessment of each course unit is expressed by a grade on a numerical scale of 0 to 20. The final classification of the course is obtained by the weighted arithmetic average (rounded to the nearest integer) of the compulsory and optional curricular units (CUs), the weighting factor being the number of ECTS. The final classification of the course is expressed in the 10-20 range of the integer numerical scale from 0 to 20, as well as in its equivalent in the European scale of comparability of classification. The final classification of the course is associated with a qualitative mark, expressed in terms of 10 to 13 - Sufficient, 14 and 15 - Good, 16 and 17 - Very Good and 18 to 20 - Excellent. Students are considered to have passed the course when they obtain a mark above 10 in all the CUs.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

This course provides students with a set of transversal competences (technical, personal and systemic), as well as a number of specific competences relating to the area of International Ocean Policy. These include specialised problem-solving skills in ocean governance, management, international policy and sustainability; skills in developing new knowledge and procedures and integrating knowledge from different areas; originality in the development and/or application of ideas; management of the marine environment in accordance with best management practices and in compliance with national and international law, particularly within our European framework; demonstrate a considerable level of innovation, autonomy, scientific and professional integrity and make a firm commitment to developing new ideas or new processes at the forefront of study or work contexts, including research; or the ability to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise new and complex ideas.
