Masters in Social Education, Development and Dynamics Locals
General Objectives of the Course
1.To specialise in Social Education, Social Pedagogy, Development and Local Dynamics/SEDLD, with emphasis on socio-educational knowledge, research and socio-educational intervention with vulnerable publics, especially children, youths and families, with a view to their empowerment, autonomy, participation and social promotion.2.To further the knowledge of public policies and projects, spaces and entities of intervention in the scope of SEDLD in the areas of Citizenship, Equality, Human Rights, Interculturality, Solidarity, Social Justice, Community Intervention, Sustainable Development, Social Innovation and Networking.
3.To develop skills in management, planning, execution and evaluation of social projects and coordination of institutions with social and educational intervention.
4.To raise awareness for the ethical dimension of researching and/or intervening in social and educational contexts with publics marked by vulnerability, marginalisation and social exclusion.
Admission Requirements
1. Applicants to the cycle of studies leading to this master’s degree must be:
a) Holders of a Bachelor's Degree in Educational Sciences/Education or other relevant fields who intend to continue their studies in Educational Sciences;
b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies, in the area of EC / Education or in other relevant areas for this master's
degree, organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a state adhering to this Process;
c) Holders of a scientific or professional school curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this study cycle by the Scientific Committee of
the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra;
d) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the institution's statutory competent body as attesting the capacity to carry out
the cycle of studies.

Professional Goals
The Social Educators' specific professional identity allows them to take up the role of educator, animator, trainer, mediator and researcher. The spaces for these functions and the respective professional activities can be:- Non-Governmental Organisations and Private Institutions of Social Solidarity
- Collective entities such as Associations, Centres, Observatories, Clubs, Movements, Communities and Companies
- Social, Educational, Cultural and Leisure Services
- Multidisciplinary Teams in CPCJ (Children and Youth Protection Commissions), CLDS (Local Social Development Contracts), EMAT (Multidisciplinary Courts Technical Support Teams), E@A (Multidisciplinary Inclusive Education Support Teams)
- Governmental Organisations such as Municipalities, Schools, Health Centres and Family Health Units, Higher Education Institutions, Prisons and Public Institutes.

Since assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to ascertain the students' skills and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognise and solve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. To undertake the exams, students must be enrolled in the exam's corresponding course units for that same year, and must also register for the exams, when registration is required. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline under the terms of RAUC, published in Diário da República, 2nd series on September 24, 2020, Chapter IV "Evaluation of Knowledge"Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
1.Understand the current framework of Social Education and the legislation that regulates the profession of Social Educator.2.Understand the public policies and the sociological, pedagogical and psychological foundations of the methodologies, techniques and processes of socio-educational intervention.
3.Conceive and carry out research projects, in the social and institutional sphere of the intervention.
4.Organise, develop and manage projects and socio-educational services (cultural, animation and leisure time, community intervention, health and welfare).
5.Collaborate and advise in the development of socio-educational programmes in the media and networks of communication and information.
6.Develop skills in education and community and family mediation.
7.Develop skills that favour work in multicultural and plurilingual environments.
8.Develop an attitude of empathy, ethics, solidarity and trust in subjects and institutions.
9.Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Recognition of Prior Learning
The University of Coimbra, through its organic teaching units, credits previous training or professional experience, with a view to continuing studies to obtain an academic degree or diploma, in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the University, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, on September 24th, 2020, Chapter XVIII "Other Rights Arising from a Situation or Special Condition" and Part VIII "Credits".Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Under the terms of article 20, no. 1, paragraphs a) and b) of DL 74/2006 of March 24 in its current wording, obtaining the degree of Master in Social Education, Development and Local Dynamics presupposes the registration and approval in all the curricular units of the Specialization Degree and the elaboration and public defense of a Dissertation of a scientific nature, original and carried out for this purpose or an Internship of a professional nature, with the elaboration of a Final Report, or a Project, also with the elaboration of a Final Report. Successfully completing all the MA's first-year course units allows for obtaining a post-graduation diploma in Social Education, Development and Local Dynamics.
Access to Further Studies
Under the terms of number 1 of article 30 of Decree-Law 74/2006 of March 24 (amended by Decree-Law No. 107/2008, of June 25 and by Decree-Law No. 230/2009 of September 14 and rectified by Statement of Rectification no. 81/2009, October 27, amended and republished by Decree-Law 115/2013 of August 7), this 2nd Study Cycle enables holders to apply for a 3rd Study Cycle.Study Programme
