Japanese Language and Culture Course – level IX

General Objectives of the Course

This level aims to reinforce and deepen the linguistic and cultural skills of students who have already reached A2 level in Japanese, preparing them for a gradual transition to B1. Through daily-life and personal themes, it seeks to develop their ability to communicate in various situations and to increase their knowledge of Japanese culture and society.
The main objectives are:
To consolidate and expand A2‑level vocabulary and grammatical structures;
To develop the ability to understand and express opinions, feelings and personal experiences in Japanese;
To practice communication strategies for solving problems, describing situations, and giving advice;
To promote understanding of aspects of life and culture in Japan through contextualized texts and activities;
To stimulate autonomy and reflection on one's own language-learning process.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be aged 16 years or over. Skills in Japanese at level B1.1. of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or successful completion of the Course in Japanese Language and Culture VIII in the last two years.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Continuous assessment requiring 75% attendance and the accomplishment of two assessment tests. Other elements are also taken into consideration, such as the participation of the student during the classes, the completion of homework, and tasks carried out throughout the course. At the end of each level, it is possible to request the issuance of the respective certificate provided that the student has obtained a successful assessment.

Final grade: 0-20 grade

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students should be able to:
– Speaking and listening comprehension:
Participate in simple conversations about personal experiences, everyday problems, and cultural preferences.
Understand the essential content of simple speeches and dialogues using familiar vocabulary.
Give short presentations on familiar topics (such as weddings, travel, work, etc.).
– Reading and writing:
Read and understand simple texts, identifying the main information.
Write brief descriptive and opinion-based texts using vocabulary and grammar appropriate for the beginning of B1 level.
Compose formal and informal messages and replies suitable for the context.
– Sociocultural interaction:
Recognize cultural and social norms related to themes such as family life, work, personal relationships and travel in Japan.
Reflect on cultural similarities and differences and communicate with respect for others’ cultural practices.
– Autonomy and learning strategies:
Use self‑learning strategies to consolidate learned vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Assess their own progress using “Can‑do” descriptors.
