Postgraduate Degree in Occupational Health Nursing

General Objectives of the Course

Develop competencies for professional, ethical, and legal practice in Occupational Nursing, in accordance with applicable legal standards, ethical principles, and professional codes of conduct.
Develop the skills required to manage advanced nursing care processes for workers or groups of workers in occupational settings, within a multidisciplinary practice environment, ensuring comprehensive, preventive, effective, and timely care.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Postgraduate Program is open to:
a) Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Nursing from a Portuguese higher education institution;
b) Holders of a foreign first-cycle degree in Nursing that complies with the Bologna Process;
c) Holders of a foreign degree recognized as equivalent to a Portuguese bachelor’s in Nursing by the School's Technical-Scientific Council;
d) Individuals with an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum in the scientific field of Nursing recognized by the School's Technical-Scientific Council as demonstrating the ability to complete the program.

Professional Goals

The course qualifies for the exercise of Occupational Nursing as directed by DGS 009/2014 of 06/03/2014, as well as for the certification by the Order of Nurses of the Differentiated Competence in Occupational Nursing within the scope of Professional Nursing Practice.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment is an integral component of the teaching and learning process. It aims to evaluate the students’ knowledge and competencies, as well as their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and proficiency in written and oral communication. The rules governing attendance, assessment, and classification are set out in the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra (RAUC). The grade awarded for each course unit is expressed as a whole number on a 0–20-point scale. A minimum final grade of 10 is required to pass a course unit. The final classification of the programme corresponds to the weighted arithmetic mean of the grades obtained in the course units. The weighting assigned to each course unit is equal to its ECTS credit value.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is governed by the provisions set out in the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra (RAUC), Regulation No. 945/2025, and Article 45(1)(a) of the Legal Framework for Higher Education Degrees and Diplomas, approved by Decree-Law No. 74/2006 of 24 March, in its current wording.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Decree-Law No. 74/2006, in its current wording, Guideline No. 009/2014 of 3 June, issued by the Directorate-General for Health, and Law No. 102/2009, which establishes the legal framework for the promotion of occupational health and safety.

Graduation Requirements

He objectives of the Course are:
Acquire and update scientific knowledge in the field of Occupational Nursing;
Acquire skills to intervene as a labor nurse;
Know the organization, activities and responsibilities of health services that relate to hygiene, health and safety in the workplace;
Characterize the factors that influence people's health in the workplace;
Identify the main risk factors in the work contexts;
Develop skills in training and promoting health and safety in the workplace;
Develop knowledge and skills for intervention and training in first aid and life support.
Develop skills for developing health promotion projects in the workplace;
Develop skills for research and production of scientific knowledge in the field of Occupational Nursing.

Successfully complete the course syllabus, obtaining a total of 30 ECTS.
