Specialization course in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry

General Objectives of the Course

The general objective of the course is to provide advanced postgraduate training in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, with a duration of 3 years full-time, based on the quality standards issued by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), and which allows the graduate to practice clinic at specialty level, allowing access to the college of Periodontology of OMD. It is intended, in a general way,
to provide trainees with an extensive and sophisticated level of skills necessary for the development of strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pathologies and conditions of periodontal and peri-implant tissues, including the reconstruction of implant beds, the surgical placement of dental implants and the
treatment of complex and multidisciplinary cases, as well as the maintenance of health, function and aesthetics of these structures and tissues. The course is structured through the development of didactic, clinical and research components.

Admission Requirements

Application to the course needs to fulfill the following degree of professional training criteria: a) Dentists (bachelor's or integrated master's degree), Stomatologists or legal equivalents (EU countries); b) Applicants from countries outside the EU require prior assessment and authorization by the Scientific Council.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final grading of the Course is expressed in the range 10 to 20 of the integer scale from 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent on the European scale of comparability of ratings. The final classification of the course is the average calculated to the nearest hundredths and rounded to the nearest unit, of the classifications obtained in the curricular units that integrate it, weighted by the respective number of credit units.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

It is intended to develop knowledge and skills in the generic domains of professionalism, ethics and jurisprudence, communication and interpersonal relationships, medicalscientific knowledge and critical reasoning, diagnosis, treatment planning and patient management, advanced clinical therapeutic skills, and establishment and maintenance of periodontal, peri-implant and oral health in an integral way. Trainees should acquire an extensive knowledge of scientific evidence from the literature, as well as experimental methodology, and autonomy of analytical clinical reasoning. It is also intended to acquire differentiated skills in the treatment of all types of periodontal and peri-implant pathology, in particular the approach to complex and multidisciplinary cases of stage III and IV periodontitis. Graduates should have autonomy in the development and implementation of a research project, and must present a study in the form of a written report or article.

Recognition of previous training: The recognition of prior learning is carried out according according to the Credits for Previous Learning and Work Experience Policy of the University of Coimbra.
