Specialization Course in Paediatric Dentistry

General Objectives of the Course

The preventive and therapeutic resolution of oral pathology in children requires an increasingly demanding level of mastery of knowledge whose specificity is based, not only on physiological and behavioral aspects of the children themselves, but also on the implementation and application of materials and techniques in constant evolution. With this specialization course it is intended that participants acquire systematic knowledge that enables and motivates them to put into practice the most appropriate clinical solutions, based on theoretical foundations within the best scientific evidence and the practical use of new materials and technologies aiming prevention and treatment solutions for oral pathology in children. At the same
time, the organizational structure of this course will aim to assess pedagogical, organizational and assessment methodologies, with the aim of allowing access to the application to the Paediatric Dentistry Specialty, in accordance with the criteria defined by the Regulation of the Paediatric Dentistry Specialty/Board of the
Portuguese Dental Association currently in effect and, as far as possible, to be internationally recognized.

Admission Requirements

Application to the course needs to fulfill the following degree of professional training criteria: a) Dentists (bachelor's or integrated master's degree in Dental Medicine), Stomatologists or legal equivalents (EU countries); b) Applicants from countries outside the EU require prior assessment and authorization by the Scientific Council. Candidates must hold an active professional certificate, issued by the Portuguese Dental Association or the Portuguese Medical Association.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final grading of the Course is expressed in the range 10 to 20 of the integer scale from 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent on the European scale of comparability of ratings. The final classification of the course is the average calculated to the nearest hundredths and rounded to the nearest unit of the classifications
obtained in the curricular units that integrate it, weighted by the respective number of credit units.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Enable the student to: a) generic mastery of fundamental/basic, medical and dental sciences, as well as the principles of prevention, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment planning of the main oral pathologies in children; b) mastering the fundamentals of child psychology and behavioral, pharmacological and non-pharmacological control techniques (including sedation with nitrous oxide/oxygen and general anesthesia), in response to the vast majority of treatment needs in Paediatric Dentistry; c) carrying out restorative treatments, with or without pulpal involvement, from the simplest to the most complex, in primary and young permanent dentition; d) mastery of the main endodontic and surgical techniques used in the child's oral cavity; e) dental (and multidisciplinary) treatment of children and young people with special needs, including medically compromised; f) provide the most appropriate response in urgent/emergency situations in oral health/clinical environment, including situations of orofacial
traumatology; g) the resolution of multidisciplinary cases in the areas of occlusion and resorting to preventive or interceptive orthodontics in the primary or mixed phase of the dentition; h) the diagnostic and therapeutic domain in the areas of oral medicine and pathology; i) carry out research and critical analysis of the literature and conduct a research project; j) mastering the principles of management, administration, deontology and ethics; k) integration into a multidisciplinary team and teaching support.

Recognition of Prior Learning

The recognition of prior learning is carried out according to the Credits for Previous Learning and Work Experience Policy of the University of Coimbra.
