Specialization Course in Advanced Design of Timber Structures

General Objectives of the Course

The course intends to create a training offer in the field of Timber Engineering aiming at transmitting theoretical and practical knowledge that constitutes a significant asset in the specific area of Timber Engineering, transmitting advanced knowledge in the topics of analysis and design of connections in timber structures and of special elements, such as arch beams and tapered beams. Withal being founded on a common basis with the Master course in Timber Construction, also offered by the University of Coimbra, it creates a specific offer that will attract a different target audience and that diversifies the University training offer in the area of Timber Construction.

Admission Requirements

Holders of first cycle (bachelor) courses or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Forestry or related areas or, as an alternative, an academic, scientific or professional curriculum whose relevance is recognized by the course coordination as attesting the capability to attend the course.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The final grade of the course will correspond to the grade of the curricular unit of the course. It will be presented on a quantitative scale (minimum: 0; maximum: 20 values).

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The students should acquire: Knowledge and competencies related to the analysis, and design of connections between wood-based products; Knowledge and competencies related to the analysis and design of special structures, namely arch and tapered beams.
