English Starter Course - Level I
General Objectives of the Course
This is an introductory course for adults who need to learn English for use in a variety of situations. It is intended for students with no previous knowledge of English. At the end of the 60-hour course they will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs; introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have; interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.Admission Requirements
Applicants must be aged 16 years or over. Candidates must take a test to evaluate their proficiency in English.

The course is based on the Empower Starter A1 Second Edition coursebook (see Bibliography), supplemented with materials provided by the teacher for further practice, as appropriate. Grammar is an important element in the syllabus and includes areas such as the verb to be, the Present Simple and Past Simple tenses, the be going to future form, can, pronouns and possessives. Given the importance of vocabulary in successful communication, the lexical fields in this course include countries, travel and transport; work and daily routines; family; eating out; shopping; free time activities; plans. The syllabus combines the learning of new language with the development of functional skills in the form of regular listening and speaking activities and some basic writing tasks.Recognition of Prior Learning
