English Starter Course – Level II
General Objectives of the Course
This is an introductory course for adults who have successfully completed the first level of the Starter English course and/or those placed in basic level on the Language Centre entrance test. At the end of the 60-hour course students will have the language and skills necessary to deal with basic everyday situations in English and will be prepared to start the one-year Elementary I English Language Course (CEFR level A2.1) with confidence. At the end of the course, students will have acquired skills in English compatible with CEFR level A1. They will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs; introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have; interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.Admission Requirements
Applicants must be aged 16 years. Candidates must take a test (mandatory) to evaluate their English proficiency or must have successfully completed the English Starter Course – level I or present a certificate ensuring that their English proficiency is equivalent to A1.1 CEFR level (after the certificate analysis applicants may be waived testing).

The course is based on the Empower Starter A1 Second Edition coursebook (see Bibliography), supplemented with materials provided by the teacher for further practice, as appropriate. Grammar is an important element in the syllabus and includes areas such as: this, that, these, those; the possessive ‘s, past simple of -to be; present continuous; object pronouns; can for ability; be going to. Given the importance of vocabulary in successful communication, the lexical fields in this course include common objects; prices; clothes; colours; past time expressions; the seasons; life events; years; abilities; months and future time. The syllabus combines the learning of new language with the development of functional skills in the form of regular listening and speaking activities and some basic writing tasks.Qualification Requirements and Regulations
