Master on Reuse of Modernist Buildings

General Objectives of the Course

Recognizing that modern architecture has spread throughout the world and has led to social, anthropological, and aesthetic transformations derived from the new use of space and the constructive typology adopted, with a strong influence on the formation of the international cultural landscape, this study cycle (EC) has its object the study of processes and methodologies of analysis and intervention in modern buildings.
In the more general context of integration into the European framework and in line with the European Ecological Pact and the strategic principles of the NOVA BAUHAUS program, the objectives of this EC are: i) to promote knowledge, innovation and leadership in the sector of reuse of the building stock modern; ii) Train specialists to intervene in processes of re-use of modern buildings at European level, with scientific rigor and technical and methodological updating.

Admission Requirements

Holders of a Bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Architecture or related areas can apply for the cycle of studies.
RMB Candidates must fulfill the VISA requirements for the three countries involved in the mobility (Germany, Belgium, Serbia, Portugal) and show the following documents:
-Proof of nationality (passport)
-Original and translated copy of the University diploma and of transcript of study results
-Curriculum vitae studiorum
-Motivation Letter (1xA4)
-Letters of Recommendation by two academics referees
-Exhibition of Portfolio by Architects, PDF of the degree theses for the remaining competitors
-Proof of English language Certificate
-Declaration signed by the applicant that he/she is eligible for the EM scholarships described on the SCHOLARSHIP page of the RMB website
Applicants will be evaluated and ranked by: a) document analysis and b) interview, according to: academic classification + professional and social skills + curricular training and candidates' motivation.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Student’s accomplishments are going to be evaluated during the trimester.
The evaluation of master dissertation / project shall be done in front of a panel of professors (jury).
Students should successfully pass examinations or academic projects to complete each of the master units; the form of examination for each unit is going to be specified in its description.
The grades are going to be given according the grading system of the hosting university.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

This EC aims to develop skills that allow students to acquire a specialization of an academic nature using research, innovation or deepening professional skills, providing them with knowledge that results in a deepening of the ability to understand and solve related problems with the re-use of modern buildings.
It aims at providing students with:
a) a complex combination of knowledge and fundamental theoretical, practical and methodological references on modern buildings;
b) critical capacity to assess the cultural, historical, aesthetic and environmental values that this built-up park contains, and manage their safeguarding and enhancement;
c) Ability to participate and/or support the definition of policies and intervention strategies in modern heritage;
d) Ability to participate in project and research activities on the modern building stock throughout Europe.

Recognition of Prior Learning

When requested by the student, the possibility of crediting relevant prior learning (professional or academic) will be assessed according in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra and the regulations of other partner institutions.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Master degree is obtained in accordance with the national laws for higher education: Portuguese Decree-Law No 74/2006, of 24 March, in its current wording.

Graduation Requirements

To obtain the Master's degree, the student must obtain approval in all curricular units of the course, totaling 90 ECTS. The student should also have the approval in the Dissertation or Project (30 ECTS).

Access to Further Studies

The master may give access to a PhD Course in Architecture and related fields.
