Training course – Practical phytonematology

General Objectives of the Course

Raise awareness of the importance and impact of PPN on ecosystems, in particular of the genera Meloidogyne (root knot nematodes), Globodera (cyst nematodes) and Pratylenchus (root lesion nematodes) and the pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus; to understand the complex life of the main PPN; to learn several techniques for nematode sampling and extraction from soil and plant material samples; to identify PPN from soil samples; to apply biochemical and molecular techniques commonly used in the identification of PPN; to analyse the main PPN control strategies; to know the main methods to extract phytochemical compounds with nematicidal activity; to analyze practical situations of PPN detection in agro-forestry systems; to know National/European legislation to quarantine PPN.

Admission Requirements

Target audience: Researchers, undergraduate, master and PhD students, technicians, stakeholders and other professionals with an academic degree in sciences with interest in plant nematology, namely Biology, Ecology, Agronomy, Plant Biotechnology and Food Engineering and related areas.
