English Language Course, Advanced Level IV

General Objectives of the Course

This language course is intended for adults Who have completed the English Language Course, Advanced level III, or have the Placement Test equivalent, and wish to continue their consolidation of their Cl language skills level to obtain the C2 level. The course is based on a communicative approach to language practice and Will expand the students' active vocabulary base and Will integrate critical thinking skills in tasks where students Will interpret long written or spoken texts or videos on a variety of current topics of interest. This highly student-oriented learning model Will take the form of oral presentations and developing projects; in addition, it Will imply a significant commitment from the students in terms of class attendance and participation and the timely completion of assignments. While the course practices many of the skills necessary for international exams, or features exercises that closely copy the format of such exams, it does not provide specific exam preparation. Similarly, although this is not a course in English for Academic Purposes, certain parallel or comparable skills Will be covered in this class, namely in the exercises from the Course Book (Student Book) adopted for Advanced IV.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The course is designed to help students work towards the CEFR level Cl skills, which include: understanding extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and relationships are not signalled explicitly; Understanding long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style and understanding specialised articles and technical instructions, even when they are not related to a familiar field; Expressing oneself fluently and spontaneously, using language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes, fortnulating ideas and opinions with precision; Orally presenting clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects, integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion; When writing, producing clear, well-structured text:s, developing points of view at some length, writing about complex subjects in a letter, an essay or a report using an appropriate style.
