Master in Concrete Structures – from Design to Retrofitting

General Objectives of the Course

This professionalising study cycle, designed and carried out in partnership with companies, namely for learning in a work context, aims at updating the knowledge and skills of graduates and masters in civil engineering, within the scope of structural concrete and reinforced concrete construction. More specifically, the aim is to update professionals in three areas not normally covered by conventional training in civil engineering: (1) rehabilitation of structures; (2) new regulations, notably in the framework of Decreto-Lei 95/2019 and the new edition of the Eurocodes; (3) digitalisation in construction. It covers the conception, design, management,
preparation, construction, supervision, inspection and evaluation, maintenance and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures.

Admission Requirements

Holder of first cycle course (bachelor), or equivalent, in Civil Engineering or other similar area, with a professional experience of at least five years.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Specific evaluation rules are established for each curricular unit according to the rules of UC, the final grade being an integer in the range 0 to 20. Approval in a given curricular unit requires a final grade equal to or higher than 10.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The received knowledge and new skills will allow them to:
• To know and apply the new regulamentation and standards of Portugal and the EU in the field of structural concrete;
• To apply computational tools to support the creation, modelling, analysis, design and management of the reinforced concrete
project;
• To apply computational information tools in the project of buildings and others structures (BIM);
• To develop projects of structures of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete;
• To apply techniques of inspection and assessment of existing reinforced concrete structures;
• To develop a rehabilitation or modification project of a reinforced concrete structure;
• To assess the seismic vulnerability of existing reinforced concrete structures;
• To develop a seismic rehabilitaion project of a reinforced concrete structure;
• To develop a reinforced concrete prefabrication project;
• To develop simple projects of foundations and soil earth retaining structures.

Recognition of Prior Learning

The candidate may ask UC the evaluation for possible crediting, of previous
relevant formation and experience, under application of “Regulamento Académico da Universidade de Coimbra”. This accreditation cannot exempt the successful public defence of the Dissertation, Work Project or Internship Report.

Portuguese legal document: “Decreto-Lei n. 74/2006” of 24 March 2006, and its subsequent legal amendments

Graduation Requirements

Successful completion of all curricular units of the edition, including the
public defence of the Dissertation, Work Project or Internship.

Access to Further Studies

By attributing the master’s degree, this study cycle allows access to third cycle studies, limited to the specific requirements established by each of these courses.
