General Objectives of the Course

Course objectives:
• Construction of a referential of in-depth knowledge about the history, historiography and ideologies of the Portuguese processes that generated the various forms ofPortuguese cultural influence;
• contact with diverse forms and patrimonial manifestations in the widest scope with Portuguese cultural influence;
• development of advanced critical and methodological tools;
• deepening of disciplinary views without abandoning inter/transdisciplinary reflection exercises;
• territorial contextualization of the heritage, considering the geo-human dynamics;
• reflect on the opportunities for cooperation and development, the potential conflicts over heritage and heritage processes;
• reciprocal awareness between the components of programmatic and technical action in heritage;
construction of a theoretical framework of reference on narrowing the convergence between cultural heritage and sustainable development;
• development of autonomous research culminating in the doctoral dissertation.

Admission Requirements

a) Holders of a master's degree or legal equivalent;b) Holders of a bachelor's degree in any disciplinary field of Arts (including Architecture), SocialSciences and Humanities,holders of an academic or scientific CV especially relevant andrecognized as attesting the necessary competences for the accomplishment of this cycle of studiesby the Academic Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research;c) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the necessary competences to carry out this cycle of studies by the Academic Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research; d) The assessment of candidates without a master's degree will be conducted in a particularly selective manner.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

In curricular units with a teaching load, all on a seminar basis, the assessment will be made based on participation in the activities of the seminar and completion
of a final essay or report through a scale 0-20; in the two tutorial courses, the assessment will be made by a jury that will discuss and evaluate the respective Qualification Report and Thesis in a viva's session.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The course students have a very diverse background and curriculæ. In addition to the general objectives of advanced training in research methods and knowledge production, it is intended that students develop group working and international networks skills, creating a multiplier effect of this scope of studies. It is also intended that the Ph.D. students are provided with extensive cultural frameworks on the central theme of the course and the geography, resources, locations, and narratives that make up these cultural universes. In this line, heritage is a concept and a banner for developing an area of integration of the most diversified cultural studies. Without denying the relevance of the most diverse material expressions, the course's central focus is, admittedly, that of living heritages, that is, those in permanent change and day-to-day express the evolution of Humanity. For the course, cultural heritage is not past, but contemporaneity, it is also synonymous of sustainability.

Graduation Requirements

Approval of the 240 ECTS provided for in the study plan, of which the last 150 correspond of a doctoral thesis on the generic theme of Heritages of Portuguese Influence, and specific to the branch of the chosen specialty, which complies with the legal and academically recognized requirements for that.
