Master in Exercise and Health

General Objectives of the Course

1. Deepen knowledge in the areas of specialized exercise prescription, improvement of physical fitness, health and well-being.
2. Foster specialized preparation for the application of knowledge in teams and multidisciplinary contexts of professional intervention in the field of exercise and health, oriented towards emerging domains of integration with the
healthcare community.
3.Promote an intervention in professional exercise contexts, based on self-learning, problem solving and oriented towards the development of physical exercise programs.
4.Develop research in the fields of exercise prescription for health promotion and disease prevention throughout the life cycle, in adults and people with disabilities.
5.Promote the supervised work of planning, controlling and prescribing the practice of physical exercise, in the context of professional practice, ethically oriented, promoting health and gender equality.

Admission Requirements

1 – The following candidates can apply to this master course:
a) diploma in a Portuguese higher education institution;
b) diploma in an European higher education institution that is organized according to Bologna principles;
c) diploma obtained in other systems that are recognized by the Scientific Committee of the Faculty [FCDEFUC];
d) candidates with a professional curriculum that is considered relevant by the Scientific Committee of the Faculty
[FCDEFUC];
d) holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out
this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty. Candidates must obtain a positive curriculum evaluation,
considering the criteria and weightings established by the Scientific Committee of the Faculty.
2) In subparagraphs a), b) and c) of nº1, applications from graduates are accepted, preferably from the Sports Sciences area, but also from related scientific areas.

Professional Goals

The Master's Degree in Exercise and Health (MES), with the two proposed areas of specialization, has a
wide field of professional intervention, training exercise physiologists, and specialists in exercise prescription with skills in
assessment, planning, intervention, and monitoring of physical exercise in different contexts aiming at the maintenance or
improvement of health and well-being. This postgraduate training course will allow the exercise of the profession of
Specialized Physical Exercise Technician in: i) gyms and health clubs, ii) health centers and private clinics, which use physical
exercise programs to prevent and reduce risk the occurrence of cardiovascular, metabolic and psychological diseases such as
anxiety, stress, depression and mood swings, iii) institutions, such as municipalities and IPSS, which dynamize and implement
regular physical exercise programs, with a view to improving community health and well-being, iv) companies that intend to
develop exercise programs aimed at preventing occupational diseases or improving the physical and mental health of their
workers, aiming at an increase in health, happiness and productivity, iv) institutions and public-private bodies that develop
physical exercise programs aimed at occupation leisure time, the improvement of physical condition and the improvement of
the quality of life. Furthermore, the area of specialization in special populations allows for specific training aimed at providing specialized services in the area of prescription of physical exercise, in response to the specific needs of exercise practice of people with disabilities (physical, sensory, intellectual and behavioral), and their professional intervention may occur, in the same professional contexts, according to an inclusive perspective. However, the MES also offers its students the possibility to pursue their professional career, directing it to the area of scientific research. The study plan contemplates the possibility, in both fields, of acting in formal contexts of research and scientific production, enabling students to present individual research projects, as well as their integration in research teams associated with research projects. ongoing investigation.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Since the assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for, according to the University of Coimbra Academic Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral
defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above-mentioned items.Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to be approved. Whenever the grade comprises more than
one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline under the terms of the UC Academic Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Competences of the MES student:
1.1.Understand and apply specialized knowledge in physical exercise, as way of improving physical fitness, promoting health and preventing disease.
2.1.Mobilize specialized knowledge in physical exercise and adapted physical activity to intervene in different populations, including those with pathologies or disabilities, associated special needs and groups at high risk of morbidity and mortality.
2.2.Cooperate in multidisciplinary teams in the assessment, prescription and control of exercise aimed at promoting health and preventing disease.
3.1.Create organized proposals for the prescription, implementation and control of physical exercise programs for people with or without disabilities and with different conditions throughout life.
4.1.Create appropriate research designs in the field of exercise prescription.
5.1.Properly intervene in different professional contexts, public or private, in the area of exercise and health.
