Lectures and interactive methods. Participant modelling, role playing, case analysis and discussion, and feeback.

1.To acquire knowledge and develop critical thinking about the concepts of abnormal behaviour and mental disorder.
2.To know and to reflect critically about the main systems of diagnostic classification.
3.To acquire knowledge on identification, characterisation, diagnosis and assessment of the most common mental disorders.

Syllabus

The study and the classification of abnormal behaviour and mental disorders.

2. The main systems of diagnostic classification.

2.1. The Manual of Diagnosis and Statistics of Mental Disorders;

2.2. The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

3. Introduction to psychopathological disorders: clinical description, classification, diagnosis, epidemiology, comorbidity, differential diagnosis, etiology and general notions of treatment; presentation and discussion of clinical cases.

3.1. Anxiety disorders (e.g. panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder)

3.2. Mood disorders (e.g. unipolar depression and bipolar disorder)

3.3. Eating disorders (e.g. anorexia and bulimia)

3.4. Substance-related disorders (e.g. alcoholism)
