Masters in Portuguese as a Foreign Language and Second Language
General Objectives of the Course
This program actively contributes to the advanced and specialized training of professionals in the field of Portuguese as a Second and Foreign Language (PSL/PFL), both as resaerchers and as instructors. The program is thus aimed at candidates applying to Portuguese lectureships abroad, seeking PSL/PFL teaching positions in the educational systems of foreign countries and to teachers working in the Portuguese educational system, as to meet the specific needs of the large numbers of students for whom Portuguese is not a native language.Admission Requirements
1. a) Holders of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Languages and Literatures; b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle which should be structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process; c) Holders of a foreign academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of a bachelor's degree; d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized as attesting the capacity to successful complete this cycle of studies. 2. The recognition referred to in the 1st paragraph only gives access to the cycle of studies and it does not grant the equivalence to a Bachelor’s degree or the recognition of that degree. 3. Applicants who are non native speakers of Portuguese must exhibit level C1 proficiency in Portuguese (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever the grade comprises more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
Upon completing the 1st year courses as well as the dissertation or project, the student is expected to be able to define, with guided supervision, research goals; to select, with autonomy, credible and relevant information in the light of the research goals defined; to plan and conduct research activities. Through the Professional Training Program, students are furthermore expected to develop the capacity to teach PFL/PSL Teaching methodologies combining teacher centered explanations of basic theoretical concepts and methodologies with student tasks such as guided readings of scientific references in the field, practical exercises and the analysis of authentic corpora produced by non native speakers of Portuguese aim at fulfilling these goals. The degree to which the learning outcomes are met is assessed through the student evaluation instruments used in each course and also through a panel evaluation, by three experts, of the dissertation and of its public defense.Course Coordinator(s)
