Master degree in Clinical Analysis

General Objectives of the Course

The Master’s Course in Clinical Analysis aims to impart knowledge and a specialized and multi-faceted training in the area of laboratory diagnosis, giving it scientific and technical expertise appropriate to a high professional level of that area. A solid theoretical training in different valences, achieved through the various curricular units, is complemented by carrying out a traineeship in the 2nd year that allows the acquisition of practical experience on these valences, integrating the acquired knowledge, culminating in the preparation of a final Internship Report, subject to public defense before a jury appointed by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Pharmacy. In addition to professional expertise, this course provides an academic and scientific training that allows the continuation of the 3rd cycle studies in different scientific areas within the Biomedicine.

Admission Requirements

Candidates to the master’s degree may be:
a) holders of a Bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent;
b) holders of a foreign higher academic degree, that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle of studies, which should be structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process in an adhering country to this Process;

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. The following are examples of assessment items: Oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, as well as class participation. Assessment for each class may include one or more of the above mentioned items. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20 and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The learning outcomes to be developed in the Master’s Degree in Clinical Analysis can be summarized as:
i) Acquisition of a specialized and multi-faceted formation/training in the area of laboratorial diagnosis and of basic skills in interpreting the most common laboratory findings in human biological samples with pathological
situations. Thus, it is intended that students should gain knowledge and specific competencies to work as a Health Laboratory Technician, in a Laboratory of Clinical Analysis in its main valences, in particular, Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology and Microbiology.
ii) Acquisition of basic practical skills to work in key areas of Clinical Analysis Laboratory and technical-scientific autonomy for the realization and validation of analytical methods applied to that area as well as for the
understanding and implementation of the quality management system in the laboratory of Clinical analysis.
iii) In addition to this professional guidance, acquisition of a basic academic and scientific training that will enable the continuation of 3rd cycle studies in different scientific areas underlying the Clinical Analysis.
These general goals have been developed in the form of specific objectives in the various curricular units of the course and, at the end, in the curricular internship, and they have been operationalized through the attendance of
classes and evaluations performed in all the units, as well as through the evaluation of the student's performance during his interneship and in the end public proof of presentation and discussion of his Training Report. It should

curricular units, where it will gauge the degree of achievement of the objectives.
This course comprises four semesters, being awarded the Degree of Master whom it obtains 120 mandatory ECTS (Health Sciences and Technology: 72 ECTS, Quality and Certification: 4 ECTS; Stage/project: 44 ECTS).
