Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
General Objectives of the Course
The general fundamental goal of the study cycle is to provide basic, but substantiated, knowledge in the various domains of Civil Engineering, providing the students with a sound education and training in structuring areas such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and computation, besides basic formation in specific areas of civil engineering related to various types of territorial interventions aimed at fulfilling social needs. Additionally, it is simultaneously intended to encourage the students to valorise the skills and personal attitudes required for the professional activity, namely scientific thinking and creativeness, criticism and sense of responsibility, the capacity for autonomous learning, for interacting and working in group and with multidisciplinary teams, self-adaptation, communication, ethics, leadership, for self-demand, cultural ecumenism, the valorising of knowledge and to promote the entrepreneurship and the creation of innovative companies supported by research.Admission Requirements

Professional Goals
In this 1st cycle course with 3 years of duration, it is expected that the students obtain basic knowledge in civil engineering which allow the integration in a master course (2sd cycle), which will complement the knowledge, having after finishing the two cycles the required valences to an easier integration into the labour market, national and international, in areas related to civil engineeringThe new competences and knowledge obtained in this degree can enable the integration into the labour market as a higher technician. As the engineering is a regulated activity, the exercise of the functions of a graduate in Civil Engineering are those allowed by the professional institutions/associations (OE and OET).

The evaluation rules are defined for each unit of the course in accordance with the regulation of the University of Coimbra.Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
At the end of the cycle of studies, students are expected to have obtained key theoretical knowledge in the fundamental sciences subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing) and in different civil engineering areas of work (constructions, structures, geotechnics, hydraulics and territory/transports planning), that will enable them to increase their understanding and analysis of different-type issues, as well as pursuing a Master’s (2nd cycle) in civil engineering, or similar field. At the same time, students will be developing skills that will enable them to:- Recognise, identify and understand the main issues in the diverse civil engineering fields.
- Define strategies and intervention techniques for simple problems, that will also enable them to solve various other issues.
- Design, scale and build different types of civil engineering projects with a low level of complexity.
- Take their first steps in investigation and research in the civil engineering field.
- Work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Develop team spirit, self-responsibility, self-discipline, self-learning and self-confidence to increase their capacity to deal with new subjects.
