Objectives and Profile of the Programme
The Postgraduate Course of Quality and Patient Safety in Healthcare has as main aim to build knowledge and create skills in healthcare providers that make them capable of care for patients in agreement with the basics of Quality and Patient Safety. They must also to be a changing factor and a contributing element to quality continuous improvement. The specific aims will be: To know quality, quality in healthcare and patient safety concepts; To know how to use quality indicators, in evaluation, monitoring or benchmarking; To know and how to use strategies of continuous improvement of quality and patient safety; To know the legislation about Health related to quality and patient safety; To know the patient rights and obligations; To know the medical error, the factors contributing to them and how to deal with the problem in order to lower the incidence. Competences to be developed by students: To know the legislation about Health related to quality and patient safety; To know the patient rights and obligations; To know the medical error, the factors contributing to them and how to deal with the problem in order to lower the incidence; To know what are high reliability organizations and how to transform the healthcare units The University of Coimbra has as mission to create, critical analysis, culture transmission and diffusion of science and technology fostering the economical and social development, environment protection and promotion of social justice based on knowledge. The organic units of Medicine and Economy also share the teaching, research and technical development as main objectives, taking in consideration the socioeconomically reality. The course of Quality and Patient Safety on Healthcare as an objective the promotion of social justice and better use of science in the process of caring for the patient. The course will be provided in two semester with Quality and Patient Safety evenly distributed. The students must also complete the online courses of the IHI Open School.

Access to Further Studies
This Post Graduate in Quality and Safety in Health Care Course does not grant a degree, but it allows students to have access to a higher level training, namely 2nd cycle studies (Master’s Degree).
Admission Requirements
The applicants should have a degree in any subject related to healthcare, namely Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy or Allied Health Professions, a good knowledge about the health system and professional experience, working on the health sector will be a factor of preference. The applicants should have a degree on a related healthcare profession; basic informatics knowledge and internet use capability, and statistical concepts. They have to show also a good knowledge about the use of English.
Recognition of Prior Learning
The provisions of article 45 in the Decree Law no. 74/2006, 24th March, with the words of Decree Law no.107/2008, 25th June shall apply.

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no 74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by the decree: DL no 107/2008, 25th June; Ordinance no 782/2009, 23rd July.
