Objectives and Profile of the Programme
This doctoral program aims to confer advanced scientific training in research methods and Information Sciences and Technologies so as to enable students to conduct scientific research autonomously. The program has a duration of three to five years. It consists of a curricular part, the “Doctoral Course,” and of a second part aimed at the preparation of an original thesis. The duration of the Doctoral Course is usually one year. It consists of four elective taught courses and the preparation and defense of a Thesis Proposal. The following years should be dedicated to research work leading to the writing of the final dissertation.Mode of Study

N/AAdmission Requirements
1—Admission is open to the following candidates: a) Portuguese bachelor graduates with a final grade of at least 16 (out of 20) whose degree was obtained in the scope of the legislation previous to Law 49/2005 of 30 August, as well foreign applicants with equivalent qualifications. b) Holders of a Master's degree or equivalent qualification that demonstrably possess an Information Science and Technology academic background. 2—The adequacy of the academic background of such applicants will be assessed by the scientific commission of Informatics Engineering. 3—Exceptionally, the Scientific Council of FCTUC may, upon proposal of the scientific commission of Informatics Engineering, accept the application of candidates holding a scientific, academic or professional curriculum that attests their ability to complete this cycle of studies.Recognition of Prior Learning
A request for recognition of ECTS credit units obtained in other doctoral programs, in Portugal or abroad, may be presented to the Informatics Engineering scientific commission.Qualification Requirements and Regulations
